The Samsung Gear Fit 2 might not be the perfect wearable on the market, it is a very good device for those that want both a fitness tracker and smartwatch capabilities. Samsung made tremendous improvements on their first iteration providing more power and functionality than previously. While this is clearly a powerful and attractive option within the wearable space, it does not come without it’s competition. Microsoft’s latest iteration of their Microsoft Band series is a solid option for those looking for the same kind of functionality that the Gear 2 provides. Because they are both some of the best options available within the wearable space, it is likely that you are going to be forced to make a decision on which one to opt for when you are in the market for a device with such capabilities. Samsung Gear Fit 2 vs. Microsoft Band 2:
Design and Comfort
While the two might look similar at first glance, they each have their design aesthetic that is going to be subjective. The Gear Fit 2 clearly has a larger screen that is going to be more vibrant and saturated than that of the Microsoft Band 2. The Band 2 has a display size of 1.36 inches whereas the Samsung has a screen that is 1.5 inches. This might not seem like a huge difference, but when you are talking about devices with screens this small, that difference is huge in terms of real estate.
With that being said, the Samsung is also lighter and much more comfortable while wearing than the Microsoft Band 2. Because of Samsung’s perfect iteration and design of the curved screen, it is simply a much more comfortable device to wear all of the time. Also, the materials utilized in the design process of the Microsoft Band 2 are much less premium feeling than the Samsung Gear Fit 2. That being said, they both could use some work on the overall design and building materials of each gadget. The Band 2 offers a sliding clasp style mechanism to close whereas the Gear Fit 2 offers a push in button kind of clasp like a more traditional watch. Both are easy to use and customize and make putting on and taking off the gadgets easy.
Performance and Tracking
The Microsoft Band 2 is full of sensors for just about anything that you can think of. It features 10 different sensors which make it a complete fitness tracking device. Whereas, the Gear Fit 2 falls short and only offers five sensors which limit it uses considerably. However, with the amount of sensors in each device, you should be able to have sufficient tracking no matter what kind of activity you are going to be doing. Each offers their apps, and both of the companion apps are similar as they are both capable of providing all kinds of good fitness data that you would want. Microsoft Health is considered more robust in terms of data analysis but they are both excellent.
In the end, your choice is likely going to come down to preference. The Microsoft Band provides much better cross-platform functionality as the Gear Fit 2 doesn’t provide any. Therefore, if you currently own a Windows or iPhone, the Microsoft Band is a clear choice. If you own an Android phone, your choice is going to be less clear.
